Elf on the Shelf-ing

November 28, 2012

Do you use the Elf on the Shelf? I haven’t decided where exactly I fall with this Santa business, but if I decide to go all out with it, I’ll probably try The Elf.  For those unfamiliar, the concept is that you have this Elf who sits in a different place every day, watching your children for naughty/nice-ness, and every night, he flies off to the North Pole to snitch, I mean, report to Santa on his/her/their behavior.  The really good, caring parents leave the elf (does he have a name?) in funny or interesting vignettes every morning (eating marshmallows! Fishing in the sink! Making out with Barbies….well, maybe not that one.  That is probably why I shouldn’t do Elf on the Shelf.) Well, I’m still on the fence, but people have really come up with cute things to do.  Check out these sites with some fun ideas.

balancinghome has a cute list of 27 EotS ideas.  Nothing too crazy, so it’s good for the regular parents out there, you know, the busy ones.

lilblueboo, on of my favorite blogs, has TONS of lists of ideas for this guy–she’s been doing it for a couple years now.  And she has the absolute best PG-13 and R rated ideas.  Cover your children’s eyes. You will die laughing.

Jenna’s Journey has 25 great ideas for younger kids.

So, what do you think of EotS? Do you think your kids like it? Are they a little afraid of him?

My grandmom always had an elf on the shelf. I always felt like he was staring at me. So I guess it was working. lol.

Hahaha! There is something sinister about the whole thing, but I hear that kids LOVE their elves and are so excited to see them every morning. Go figure!

It sounds like fun for the parents too. The kids would probably be extra good for the next few weeks in fear of losing a present or two.

I would have found this terrifying as a child. Also, it reminds me of that movie “Trilogy of Terror” with the murderous African doll.

I LOVE THAT MOVIE. And now I’ll definitely never have an Elf on the Shelf.
