Hobbit Inspired Design

December 17, 2012

Did you go see The Hobbit? Most of my friends are geeky in the “Lord of the Rings/Harry Potter” way, so they are all in a tizzy over it.  I’ll probably see it, but my favorite things about The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit are the roly-poly hillside homes and green hills of the Shire.  Why Bilbo and Frodo decide to leave is totally beyond me (NERD ALERT).  I love the rounded rooflines and doorways in the hobbit houses and I think it would be rad to have a few of those details in my own home.  Here are some ways you can add a little shire to your home:

Although real hobbits have perfectly round doors, that’s not exactly practical for those of us who are over, say, 4 feet tall.  But an arched double door like this certainly gives me a similar feeling.

Nothing says Shire more than a grassy roof.  Green roofs are great for the environment (and your heating and cooling costs), and so pretty.  I love that this is just a regular house that you would see in a normal suburb, but with a lawn on the roof! It’s a little weird, but I think it’s really pretty.  This image is from The Sierra Club‘s website, which has a bunch of information about green roofs if you are interested in finding out more.

If you’re ready to go all out, take a look at this Hobbit inspired home in Pennsylvania for inspiration.  It is pretty incredible.

If you’re not ready to commit to a round door or a grass-covered roof, this print is a nice, affordable little punch of Middle Earth, without making you look totally insane.

Just because YOU can’t live on The Shire doesn’t mean your chickens cant! Don’t you think they’d like to live in a Hobbit Hole Chicken Coop? I love this!

Did you know you can visit The Shire from the movies and tour the Hobbit Holes yourself? Well, jump on a plane to New Zealand and get on the chartered bus out to Hobbiton and watch your back for Orcs! This would just be bizarre and  incredible.
