Electrolux Design Lab 2013

March 13, 2013

Do you remember those “home of the future” shorts that used to come on tv? I actually remember this one, which was old when I was a kid, but no less mesmerizing!

I love it! But it’s been over 50 years since this was made, and we still don’t have a lot of this stuff!! I want a refrigerator that comes out of the ceiling and that under the counter dishwasher that pops up when you need it.

Every year, Electrolux holds a design contest that pushes the envelope of household appliances.  Designers all over the world submit videos and sketches of their ideas, and the winner receives 5,000 Euros and a six month paid internship at the Electrolux Design Institute.  Some of these concepts seem like something from the Jetsons! Here are some of my favorites from previous years:

Last year’s winner, Polish Designer Jan Ankiersztajn, submitted a concept for Aeroballs, luminescent air filtering and freshening orbs that float in the air and fall to the ground when they need to be changed.  I love the idea of little lights hovering around a room.

2010’s Design Lab was my all time favorite, with the Space Age Appliances theme, and this refrigerator by Yuriy Dmitriev is one of the the weirdest most awesome ideas ever.  Basically, you store your food in cold goo, which conforms to the shape of each item and cools it to the correct temperature.  So freaky.

The iBasket by Guopeng Liang was one of the 2008 finalists.  A portable, programmable laundry hamper that also washes and dries your clothes! I could use one of those right now, actually.

This Thursday is the last chance that designers have to enter their concepts for the 2013 Electrolux Design Lab.  The theme this year is Inspired Urban Living.  I can’t wait to see the finalists!
