Does Clutter Stress You Out?

June 5, 2013

Clutter makes me crazy.  My home used to be a no-clutter zone, where all of our stuff was useful and everything had a place.  And then we had a child, and now I frequently run across things whose origins are a mystery to me.  Where did we get all these 6 inch baby dolls? Why do we have so many strands of Mardi Gras beads? Who keeps blowing up balloons??

Suffice it to say, we are now in possession of our fair share of random items that have no “place.” I can’t take it anymore, though, so we are on the verge of a major MAJOR purge.  All this extra stuff has got to go because it is STRESSING ME OUT! At least I’m not alone–Huffington Post reported last month that home organization is one of the most universal stress triggers among Americans.  According to their survey, 91 percent of Americans were recently stressed about something, and of those, 84 percent claimed home organization as a source of worry.

This is great news! It means that all those people that I think are judging me because of my disorganized bookshelves or pile of random mail on the kitchen counter are very likely to be worrying that I’m judging them! Here is a good idea: let’s all just relax a little bit.

I’m still getting rid of a whole bunch of stuff, though.  Read the full article here.
