DIY Gifts for Dad

June 11, 2013

Let’s talk about DIY Mother’s/Father’s Day gifts for a second.  They are usually terrible.  I mean, what do you do with a handprint heart, or a clay pinch pot? These things are cute, but a pile of them that grows year after year is definitely not. But pile up, they must, because parents feel guilty throwing that stuff away.  Don’t make your parent feel guilty on their special day.

This doesn’t mean that DIY gifts are completely forbidden, though! Here are a few ideas that dads will actually like and, most importantly, use.

You are three ingredients away from making this homemade whipped shave cream! This one is great, because it’s easy enough that the kids can help.  If you want to get really fancy, add some essential oils (I’m thinking rosemary, mint, or citrus would be great for this!) – From Little House Living

You can make cufflinks out of practically anything–just pick up a set of cufflink backs (like these–10 pairs for less than $5!) and glue something on them! So You Think You’re Crafty shows Lego, baseball, fishing, and golf themes, but you could also do map pieces, circuit board bits, text from his favorite book, little pictures of the kids’ faces, or whatever!

Whip up a batch of homemade barbecue sauce with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry and fridge! Put it in a mason jar, tie it with a ribbon, and fire up the grill.  From Simply Scratch

These baby face thumbtacks are hilarious.  From Martha Stewart

For the bike commuters among us, this bicycle frame lunch bag is such a great idea, and only requires rudimentary sewing skills! From Evil Mad Scientist

These monogrammed collar stays are so special and classy.  From Shrimp Salad Circus
