How to Remove a Popcorn Ceiling

September 13, 2013

Who knows why popcorn ceilings were so big in the ’80s and ’90s? Unfortunately, many of us are stuck with the remnants of this weird trend.

Getting rid of a popcorn ceiling is a great way to modernize your home. Plus, all those little peaks and valleys create lots of shadows on the ceiling, making your rooms look darker. You won’t believe how bright your house will look without all those bumps! There are lots of tutorials out there for removing textured ceilings, but the premise of all of them is the same. First, using a spray bottle, completely soak an area of your ceiling with water. Next, scrape all the popcorn things off, using a putty knife or a special ceiling scraper tool. Finally, sand the sheetrock and paint it.

Here is a more detailed tutorial from View Along the Way, but it’s really that simple!

If you’re planning to sell your home, this project will have super high-impact at a super low-cost, so it’s well worth the crick you’ll have in your neck!
