The Nest Smoke Detector

October 9, 2013

I am a pretty decent cook, but that doesn’t mean I’ve never had a run-in with a smoke detector. Who hasn’t forgotten that bread under the broiler, or those fries at 425 in the oven? And the only way to deal with the piercing noise is to stand under the detector fanning it with a towel, while shouting, “Everything’s FINE, stop freaking out, everyone!” Haha

Well, makers of the Nest Thermostat, which I wrote about here, are now developing a smoke and carbon monoxide detector called “Protect” which will connect to both the thermostat and to the home owner, via a smartphone. Of the many rumored features, one of the most exciting for me is a motion sensor that allows you to turn off the detector with a wave of your hand. No more  frantic towel waving for me! The unit’s ability to alert you to which room in your home has smoke or gas would also be a plus. And of course, receiving updates from your smoke detector would be a welcome relief on those mornings when you’re not quite sure if you turned off the iron.

Plus, with the same guy who developed Apple’s most famous designs heading up the operation, Nest’s new device is sure to be just as beautiful as it is functional. I can’t wait to see it!

Read about it here.
