Local: Harsher Penalties for Negligent Homeowners
January 14, 2014
Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman is pushing legislation to increase penalties for property owners with code violations. Columbus doesn’t have a huge problem with blight, but there are some neglected properties out there that need to be fixed up. Increasing fines (and even jail time) may help. Coleman has also set aside $600,000 to hire additional code enforcers.
“We are serious about holding negligent property owners responsible for their failures to maintain their properties so that our neighborhoods do not deteriorate and lose their values,” said City Attorney Richard C. Pfeiffer.
