Home Sweet Parking Garage

April 11, 2014

As more people are relocating to urban areas, the demand and cost of living downtown have skyrocketed. Real estate in these areas is extremely limited, and yet, bulky parking garages often take up space that could otherwise be used for housing. With fewer people driving cars, parking garages are now only used about half of the time, so Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) has envisioned a future in which each parking space can house an entire studio apartment, complete with kitchen, bathroom, and a flexible living space.

Each of the prototypes (called SCADpads) they’ve designed also take advantage of the wonderful skyline views visible from the parking decks in these giant garages as well. The units are packed with style and are targeted at millennials, who crave affordable, efficient housing and the mobility and communal environment that a parking garage full of peers would provide.
