When we moved to Columbus, it was pretty clear that for a single family home in the area we liked, a monthly mortgage payment would be cheaper than renting. This may never hold true in super expensive markets like New York or San Francisco, but it is the case in many more affordable cities right now. We were lucky enough to work with a great realtor who got us into a great house within our budget and in our favorite neighborhood and school district, and if we ever decide to move, we know that we’ll be able to charge more than the mortgage in rent!

If you’re curious about whether buying or renting would make the most sense for you, the only real way to find out is to get out there and compare prices. Realtor.com has a handy cost calculator to help you out, too. Check it out here.
